What we look for here
  • Wind directionS (185°) → SW (215°)
  • Ideal speed5–12 mph
  • Upper limits≤ 15 mph base · gusts ≤ 18

SSW-facing launch (slope aspect ~205-210 deg) near Stanardsville, VA, owned by Flying Pigs Land Trust (launch) / managed by Roger Ritenour; LZ owned by Wayne Powell. Core flyable slot is SW-to-SSE; site guide cites a working band roughly 185-210 deg with ideal light winds of 5-7 mph and gusts up to ~18 mph. NOT flyable in any west crosswind. Grassy, steep launch in a narrow slot - a clean straight-in (SSW) cycle is needed; cross or west components produce rotor/turbulence off the narrow slot. HAZARD: power line near launch - keep clear. Landing is a large, sloping grassy field. Access: 4WD ONLY up the gravel Old Mountain Rd; drive slowly, do NOT park on/beside the gravel road (neighbor relations). Rating: P2/H2 minimum. Good thermal/XC potential (~6 XC days/yr); best on warm-season afternoons once the SSW slope is sun-baked, but keep base wind under P2 limits (12 mph base / 15 gust) for novices.
