Wind direction

S (185°) → SW (215°)

The wind must blow from within this arc. Direction is the same for both wings.

Ideal speed

5–12 mph

Ceiling · Paragliding

≤ 19 mph base · gusts ≤ 23

Top of the range for paragliding (any rating). Switch wings up top to compare. Hang gliders hold roughly 10 mph more than paragliders.

SSW-facing grassy slot launch near Stanardsville, on Flying Pigs Land Trust land (managed by Roger Ritenour). Needs a clean straight-in SW-to-SSE cycle; any west crosswind brings rotor and it's not flyable then. Light winds work best, around 5-7 mph. Watch the powerline near launch. Landing is a large sloping grassy field. 4WD only up Old Mountain Rd, and don't park on or beside the gravel road (neighbor relations). P2/H2 minimum.
