UHGPGA site guide gives explicit numbers. Launch works in W-S (west through southwest to south), aligning with the S/SW/W orientation hint; ideal arc centered on SW (~225). Two launches: Lower Launch (paraglider primary, P3) ideal 10 mph / max 14 mph; Upper Launch (hang gliders H3) ideal 8 mph / max 14 mph, or P3 ideal 4 mph / max 10 mph. Speeds given are conservative because this is a high-altitude (8783 ft MSL) mountain-thermal site with strong midday turbulence. HAZARDS: Severe wind shear when winds shift from south to north (typically midday or later) — north flow may exist aloft despite benign surface conditions. Transmission towers and wires ~1.7 mi west between launch and LZ. Numerous abandoned mines in the launch area with very limited turnaround space. BEST TIME: late-afternoon glass-off; avoid thermic midday. RATING: USHPA H3/P3 required. ACCESS: high-clearance 4WD mandatory on ~7-mile rocky/rutted dirt road (gain ~3500 ft from Stockton), chains Nov-Mar, mud after snowmelt/rain. Visiting pilots must get an in-person pre-flight briefing from a local UHGPGA member with recent experience at the site.
