What we look for at Commodore

Wind direction

S (185°) → WSW (245°)

The wind must blow from within this arc. Direction is the same for both wings.

Ideal speed

6–12 mph

Ceiling · Paragliding

≤ 19 mph base · gusts ≤ 23

Top of the range for paragliding (any rating) — switch wings up top to compare. Hang gliders hold roughly 10 mph more than paragliders.

High-altitude (~8,800 ft) mountain-thermal site managed by UHGPGA, with a lower (paraglider) and upper (hang glider) launch. Flyable in W through S; keep speeds conservative. The main danger is severe shear when the wind shifts south to north around midday - north flow can sit aloft even when the surface feels calm. Wires and towers between launch and the LZ, plus abandoned mines and tight turnaround near launch. Best in the late-afternoon glass-off. H3/P3, high-clearance 4WD up a rough 7-mile road, and an in-person briefing from a local required.
