What we look for here
  • Wind directionSW (220°) → W (260°)
  • Ideal speed5–10 mph
  • Upper limits≤ 14 mph base · gusts ≤ 18

SDHGPA club guide gives explicit numbers. Launch faces 240 (WSW). Ideal wind 220-260 deg at 5-10 mph; acceptable arc 185-272 deg. CRITICAL HAZARD: do NOT launch when wind crosses more than 30 deg from the right (W-NW); a very strong mechanical rotor forms in front of the launch ramp and multiple pilots have been injured in these conditions. Wind typically clocks more NW as the day evolves, so avoid the rock faces near launch once it shifts NW unless several hundred feet over the ridge. A small lip in front of launch can cause rotor in any direction. Max usable speed PG ~14 mph / HG ~17 mph; max gust spread PG ~4 mph / HG ~6 mph (speeds shown are PG values). Best time: early afternoon in winter; morning or evening glass-off in spring/summer/fall. Summer months are turbulent and low-flying aircraft are a hazard (Lindbergh approach corridor 8,000-12,000 ft). Rating H2/P2 (M1 for main launch in moderate conditions); SDHGPA membership recommended. Access: high-clearance 2WD/4WD drive-up or ~45 min / 1100 ft hike. Do not land in plowed fields; check CNF road closures for Sheephead Mountain Rd (15S18).
