What we look for at Pine

Wind direction

SSE (150°) → SSW (210°)

The wind must blow from within this arc. Direction is the same for both wings.

Ideal speed

5–12 mph

Ceiling · Paragliding

≤ 19 mph base · gusts ≤ 23

Top of the range for paragliding (any rating). Switch wings up top to compare. Hang gliders hold roughly 10 mph more than paragliders.

Pine Mountain / Reyes Peak south launch near Ojai in Los Padres NF - a smooth ~45-degree south-facing dirt ramp at ~7,100 ft. Works best in a south wind (SSE-S-SSW); cross or over-the-back (north) flow makes it trashy. Mainly a light-wind thermal/XC launch, so keep base wind modest and get off by late morning to beat overdevelopment. Glide is about 4:1 to an LZ ~3,000 ft below, so a strong headwind can hurt the glide out. Hang 3 recommended; USHPA membership; road may be snowed in during winter.
