What we look for at Section 16

Wind direction

NE (45°) → SE (135°)

The wind must blow from within this arc. Direction is the same for both wings.

Ideal speed

4–12 mph

Ceiling · Paragliding

≤ 19 mph base · gusts ≤ 23

Top of the range for paragliding (any rating) — switch wings up top to compare. Hang gliders hold roughly 10 mph more than paragliders.

East-facing thermal ridge above Red Rock Canyon Open Space in Colorado Springs, run by Pikes Peak Paragliding, with a rare in-town LZ in Bear Creek Park (~1,500 ft below launch). Works best in light easterly/upslope flow; any west component puts the launch in the lee of Pikes Peak with strong rotor - don't fly it. Mostly a morning-to-midday thermal site before afternoon storms build. USHPA rating required, roughly a 1-hour hike to launch; intermediate-level site.
