ARFF (American River Free Flight) chapter site guide gives explicit numbers. Launch faces roughly west; West is best, with SW and NW acceptable. Ideal speed 10-13 mph; maximum usable wind is 16 mph INCLUDING gusts. Avoid gusty, light, or southerly wind. KEY HAZARD: South wind is "deceptively dangerous" due to mechanical turbulence/rotor. Strong wind gradient - 11 mph at pilot level can be significantly higher just 20 ft above launch. Power lines behind launch are hard to see, especially in afternoon; risk of being blown back into bushes/power lines in strong conditions. Strong thermal activity late spring/summer/early fall - primary LZ is tight with trees on south side; in summer prefer landing at Henningsen Lotus park or going XC. P4 site, one of the most technically demanding in the US; NOT for beginners. Requires USHPA membership, ARFF membership, liability waiver, mandatory site intro/sponsorship by a local site admin, and buddy system. Keep speed under 10 mph on the dirt access road (Sagebrush Rd).
