Ceiling · Paragliding
≤ 19 mph base · gusts ≤ 23
Top of the range for paragliding (any rating) — switch wings up top to compare. Hang gliders hold roughly 10 mph more than paragliders.
Technical P4 west-facing foot launch above Coloma, run by American River Free Flight. West wind is best; NW and SW work, but south wind is deceptively dangerous (mechanical turbulence and rotor). Fly 10-13 mph, nothing over 16 including gusts, and watch the strong low-level gradient plus hard-to-see power lines behind launch. The main LZ is tight with trees; in summer thermals many pilots land at Henningsen Lotus Park or go XC. Requires USHPA and ARFF membership, a waiver, a mandatory site intro/sponsorship, and buddy-system flying (no solo).
