What we look for at McClellan (Reno)

Wind direction

SW (230°) → NW (310°)

The wind must blow from within this arc. Direction is the same for both wings.

Ideal speed

7–15 mph

Ceiling · Paragliding

≤ 19 mph base · gusts ≤ 23

Top of the range for paragliding (any rating) — switch wings up top to compare. Hang gliders hold roughly 10 mph more than paragliders.

High-desert thermal site on McClellan Peak (~7,200 ft) in the Virginia Range east of Reno, known for strong, consistent thermals. Works best in a W/SW-to-NW wind. As a thermal site it comes alive midday into the afternoon; mornings are light and late afternoon can overdevelop. Expect punchy thermals, possible lee rotor if the wind swings easterly, and thin air that raises your effective launch and landing speed. Confirm rating and access with local Reno/Carson pilots.
