What we look for at Rainbow Ridge

Wind direction

E (80°) → SSE (150°)

The wind must blow from within this arc. Direction is the same for both wings.

Ideal speed

8–15 mph

Ceiling · Paragliding

≤ 19 mph base · gusts ≤ 23

Top of the range for paragliding (any rating) — switch wings up top to compare. Hang gliders hold roughly 10 mph more than paragliders.

E/SE-facing ridge in the hills west of the Truckee Meadows near Reno (~5,580 ft), also called Petersen Mountain in the BHGC listings. Works in an easterly to southeasterly flow, with ENE and SSE marginal. Since prevailing valley flow is W/SW, good soaring here is often a morning anabatic or glass-off window rather than synoptic wind. Expect strong midday thermals and lee rotor if the wind backs to the W/SW. Intermediate-plus; confirm landowner/club rules and conditions with the local Reno club.
