Wind direction

ENE (75°) → SSE (150°)

The wind must blow from within this arc. Direction is the same for both wings.

Ideal speed

5–14 mph

Ceiling · Paragliding

≤ 19 mph base · gusts ≤ 23

Top of the range for paragliding (any rating) — switch wings up top to compare. Hang gliders hold roughly 10 mph more than paragliders.

High-altitude Carson Range site on Slide Mountain near Mount Rose (launch ~8,200 ft, ~3,000 ft over the LZ). The main, more-flown launch is west-facing; an east/southeast launch is also used and this window is built around that easterly aspect. Strong, turbulent, thermic mountain air — rated H3/P3+, and paraglider pilots are warned to use extreme caution or avoid it. Wire help advised in more than a light breeze. Access off the Mount Rose Ski Bowl Hwy needs a Forest Service permit; steep loose launch, large grassy LZ with drainage ditches. Bring cold-weather gear and oxygen for the altitude.
