What we look for at The Bozeman 'M'

Wind direction

WSW (250°) → WNW (300°)

The wind must blow from within this arc. Direction is the same for both wings.

Ideal speed

3–10 mph

Ceiling · Paragliding

≤ 19 mph base · gusts ≤ 23

Top of the range for paragliding (any rating). Switch wings up top to compare. Hang gliders hold roughly 10 mph more than paragliders.

Quick hike-and-fly on the south end of the Bridger Range just NE of Bozeman, off the busy 'M' trail. Westerly wind is ideal; SW through NW is flyable and N/NW is unflyable. Light wind only — roughly 0–10 mph with gusts to about 12; the small ridge needs enough wind to soar but has no safe LZ if you get blown back. Two launches (the 3/4 launch and the upper launch above the M): crosswind launches up top risk collapses and dragging into the rock field, and powerlines border the LZ. Morning and evening katabatic outflow brings turbulent easterly wind low over the LZ. P2/H2 minimum, and visiting pilots need a local site briefing. Very popular hiking trail — avoid flying near hikers.
